When people think of wealth in Hindu tradition, Goddess Lakshmi usually comes to mind. She is widely worshipped during festivals like Diwali and is seen as the goddess of prosperity and good fortune. However, in Hindu mythology, the actual keeper and controller of wealth is Lord Kubera.
Kubera is known as the god of wealth and the treasurer of the gods. His role is not simply symbolic. According to ancient texts, he is the guardian of all material riches in the universe. This includes treasures hidden in the earth such as minerals, jewels, and precious metals. He is also the ruler of the Yakshas, mystical beings believed to protect natural treasures.
Mythological stories describe Kubera as the divine banker of the heavens. While other deities may represent fortune or prosperity, Kubera is responsible for managing and distributing wealth. Because of this role, he is sometimes called Dhanada, meaning the giver of wealth.
Kubera also serves as one of the guardians of the universe. In Hindu cosmology he is the protector of the northern direction and a Lokapala, one of the divine protectors who maintain order in the world. His celestial city, Alakapuri, is described as a magnificent place filled with unimaginable riches.
Many traditions show Kubera working alongside Goddess Lakshmi rather than replacing her. Lakshmi represents prosperity, fortune, and abundance entering a person’s life. Kubera represents the safeguarding and management of that wealth. In simple terms, Lakshmi symbolizes prosperity while Kubera acts as the treasurer who protects and distributes it.
This partnership explains why both deities are often worshipped together during important rituals related to money and prosperity. During festivals such as Dhanteras, prayers are offered to Kubera along with Lakshmi so that wealth may be both gained and preserved.
In mythology Kubera is also linked to several famous stories. One well known legend says that Lord Venkateswara borrowed wealth from Kubera for his divine wedding. Devotees visiting the Tirupati temple are believed to symbolically help repay that debt through their offerings.
The deeper message behind Kubera’s role is about responsibility. Wealth is not only about gaining riches but also about managing them wisely. Hindu tradition therefore presents Kubera as the guardian who ensures that prosperity is protected and distributed with balance.
In this way, Kubera stands as the divine steward of wealth. While Lakshmi blesses the world with prosperity, Kubera ensures that those riches are safeguarded and sustained.
